Membership

Two Wentworth encourages applications for membership from experienced and ambitious practitioners at any level, Silk or junior, to complement our expanding core practice areas.

Floor members are regularly instructed in common law, succession, equity, and commercial and criminal law matters. It would be advantageous for applicants to have some expertise in any of the key areas of practice.

The atmosphere is collegiate. All members are very supportive of junior members. The Clerk and support team are always on hand to assist Floor members.

Any enquiries for membership are treated confidentially. Interested parties should reach out to the Clerk: Briget Harrison at clerk@twowentworth.com.au or 9232 4466.

All potential members to the Floor are requested to submit an application to the clerk constituting a letter of application and a CV which will be forwarded to the Management Committee for their consideration.

Why Two Wentworth?

Our location is set in the heart of Sydney’s key legal district, Wentworth Chambers, 180 Phillip Street, Sydney (next door to the Supreme Court). Wentworth Chambers has always been an area synonymous as the address of Sydney’s leading advocates.

Two Wentworth members themselves are known for their common law and succession law capability whilst others practise in other areas including equity, commercial and criminal law.

Our clients are usually specialist accredited lawyers, law firms or inhouse counsel, who practise in these areas. A number of our practitioners are ranked in Doyles Legal Guide as leading practitioners in their field.

The Floor is very supportive of junior members. The Clerk and support team are always on hand to assist.

What will you do?

We expect our Readers to be tenacious enough to take whatever comes their way. That might be appearing in the Succession List of the Supreme Court at short notice on a directions hearing. Or it could be assisting more experienced counsel in getting on top of complex affidavit and evidentiary material in cases.

From the outset, you will likely be immersed in either common law or succession law practice areas. You will have two reader tutors (our preference is that one of these tutors be from the Floor) during your 12 months of readership. Largely, you will undertake work for one of our senior juniors but we encourage you to have your own clients as well with the consent of your tutor.

Post readership our junior members run their own cases and continue to be brought into larger matters by senior barristers on the Floor. We like to think our readers, where possible, will remain on the Floor.

How to apply?

New barristers who have completed the Bar Practice Course and Bar Exams are referred to as “readers”, upon admission. Two Wentworth Chambers provides guidance and assistance to our readers.

The Bar Practice Course is conducted by the New South Wales Bar Association twice a year (May and August/September). We consider applications periodically from pre and post-graduates of each course.

We currently have accommodation for two readers. Applications for readership with Two Wentworth may be made well before admission to the Bar.

Reader applicants are requested to send a letter of application and their relevant CV to the Clerk for the Management Committee’s consideration.

Successful applications/applicants will be invited to an interview. Further, successful applicants invited to join the Floor are now entitled to receive the benefit of The Michael Finnane KC Bursary full details are set out below.

The Michael Finnane KC Bursary

The Michael Finnane KC Bursary was launched on 8 May 2024.

The Bursary was created in a bid to encourage prospective readers to Two Wentworth with the opportunity to be immersed in an environment of mentorship and legal advocacy supported by a financial buffer. Two Wentworth acknowledges that financial considerations are a significant barrier to entry to the Bar for all considering the vocation of a barrister.

To assist the new reader’s commencement at the Bar the successful applicant will receive a total bursary of $6,250.00 together with rent free accommodation and no Floor fees for their 12 months of readership at Two Wentworth.

Bursary recipients will need to read with at least one Tutor at Two Wentworth and commit to remaining on the Floor for a period of 2 years after completion of their readership.

Support Team

The Clerk is usually supported by a rotation of law students. Interested students should send a letter of application and their CV to the Clerk.
